When to call a dentist

A painful, damaged, or knocked-out tooth needs prompt attention. Tell the office what happened and when symptoms began.

Tooth pain or swelling

Call about persistent pain, swelling, or pain when biting. An exam can help identify the cause.

A broken or knocked-out tooth

Contact a dentist promptly after a tooth injury. A knocked-out permanent tooth needs immediate dental attention.

A lost filling or crown

Call the office to arrange an assessment. Keep a loose crown safe and avoid using household glue to reattach it.

An examination and care plan

The dentist will examine the problem, discuss suitable treatment, and explain costs and timing.

When to seek medical care

Some symptoms need an emergency room rather than a dental appointment.

For trouble breathing or swallowing, or another life-threatening emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.

Questions about emergency care

Answers to help you prepare for your visit.

What counts as a dental emergency?

A knocked-out or broken tooth, severe tooth pain, swelling, or a lost restoration may need prompt dental attention. Call an office, explain what happened, and ask about the next available evaluation.

Should I call first or walk in?

Walk-ins are accepted. Calling first helps the team understand your symptoms and discuss availability. An urgent visit may begin with an examination; the treatment and timing depend on what the dentist finds.

Can I get same-day treatment?

Call your office to ask about availability. A same-day evaluation or treatment may be possible, but it cannot be guaranteed before your symptoms, treatment needs, and the schedule are reviewed.

What should I do if an adult tooth is knocked out?

Seek dental care immediately. Handle the tooth by its crown, avoid touching the root, and keep it moist, such as in milk, while arranging urgent care. Tell the office that the tooth has been knocked out.

What if a filling or crown comes out?

Keep the restoration if you have it and call the office. Describe any pain or sensitivity and explain when it came out. The dentist needs to examine the tooth to determine whether the restoration can be repaired or replaced.

When should I go to an emergency room?

Call 911 or seek emergency medical care for a life-threatening situation. Difficulty breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or a serious facial injury needs immediate medical attention.

Will insurance or Medicaid cover an emergency visit?

All offices accept Medicaid. Coverage for the exam, imaging, and treatment depends on your plan and eligibility. Ask the office to review your benefits and discuss an estimate and payment options.

What should I bring to an urgent visit?

Bring your photo ID, insurance card, and current medication list. Tell the team about allergies, relevant health conditions, and what happened. Bring a broken tooth fragment or loose crown if you have it.
